Accent Blue:

  • Center Triangles (2) 7½” squares

Tools:

  • Large Flying Geese Ruler #2007 or Mini Geese Ruler Set #2020

Detailed Step-by-step Instructions

Making the Nine-Patch Center

  1. Begin by laying out four background squares and four Accent Dark Purple squares around the Dark Green center. Ensure to use a scant ¼” for all sewing and press all seams away from the Center.
  2. Flip the second row squares to the first row squares and sew them together.
  3. Open the sewed squares and add the last row. Press the seams toward the Accent Dark Purple.
  4. Turn the block and sew to complete the nine-patch center. After sewing, press the seams to the center row and square the patch to measure 9″.

Finishing the Center

  1. Cut both 7½” Center triangles in half on one diagonal.
  2. Add a triangle piece to each side of the Nine-Patch center.
  3. Press the sides toward the triangles and trim the tips.
  4. Add the remaining two triangles and press toward the triangles. This should measure 12½”.

Making the Star Points

  1. Place the smaller square right sides together and centered on the larger square.
  2. Using the ruler on the diagonal, draw a line across the squares and sew exactly ¼” from the drawn line.
  3. Open the sewed pieces and press them flat. The seam should be pressed toward the larger triangle.

Finishing the Flying Geese

  1. Line up the ruler’s red lines on the 45˚ sewn lines and cut the block in half to separate into two patches. Hold the ruler securely on the fabric to prevent it from shifting while cutting. Trim off the excess fabric on all sides. Repeat this step with the second half.

Assembling the Block

  1. Sew two Geese patches to both sides of the background rectangle to create four sets.
  2. Add Corner squares to two of the strips and sew the short strips to each side of the block.
  3. Press toward the center, then turn the block and sew the long pieces on the block to complete. Press again towards the center.
